A Quick Trip to Boston

Anna flew back to us last Friday so that she and I could drive their car back to Boston.  Our wonderful day together on Saturday included brunch at the Proximity Hotel's Bistro.  Thanks to our server who took this picture.

Sunday Anna and I made the drive.  We switched off periodically and didn't make any long stops with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on CD when our conversations flagged.  It was a great route and we made it in 14 hours.

I spent the day on Monday with Anna at work.

Yesterday morning, Matty and Anna took me to a wonderful place for breakfast--Trident Booksellers and Cafe on Newbury Street.  You know that I would be crazy about any place that combined two of my very favorite things, breakfast and books!  

After that, we made a quick trip to say hello to Alexis, Anna's best lady from the wedding.  

From there, the kids dropped me at Logan and I flew back home to Jim.  Now it's time to get serious about some work in Safety Pin Studio!

Boston, Days 3 and 4

Sunday morning, Anna came in to join us for breakfast. The weather finally cooperated and gave us blue skies and sunshine without Saturday's cold wind. After a delicious breakfast, we visited Tevanna, a tea shop with an Eastern twist. I purchased a wonderful herbal blend (jasmine and rooibos), a flavored Earl Grey, and an almond biscotti flavored black tea. We then had a wander through the Barnes and Noble in the Prudential Center, and headed for the bus stop at Copley. Right across from the bus stop is the Old South Church. While not as famous as its sister, the Old North Church, it is an imposing edifice on Copley Square.



Back in South Boston, we met up with Matt and his mom and youngest brother for dinner.

Monday was our last day in Boston. We caught a cab to Southie and had breakfast at one of Anna and Matt's local spots. One of their specials is grilled muffins! No joke. Our lovely visit came to an end, but we will see Anna again soon for Grandma Peanuts' 80th birthday celebration in June.

Boston, Day 2

Our hotel was right across the street from the Christian Science campus. This is a picture of the main church.



There's a beautiful little grove of trees on the Huntington Avenue side of the campus. You can see, the trees aren't nearly as far along as ours down South.



Saturday, Jim, Anna, and I went to Priscilla's of Boston so we could see Anna's beautiful wedding dress. Back in 1973, when I was in Laurel Lea Schaefer's wedding we all wore dresses from Priscilla's of Boston. Anna's dress is perfect. After we finished there, we walked down to Copley Square to wait for the number 9 bus to Southie.

We got off the bus one stop early so we could make a little pilgrimage to the Italian bakery. We got some lovely treats to have with our tea and spent a lazy afternoon in South Boston. That night, we had a delicious dinner at the fantastic Venezuelan restaurant called Orinoco on Shawmut. It's a tiny place with just a few tables, but the food is so unique and exciting. These are baskets decorating the wall.

After dinner, we walked to the Calderwood Pavilion to see a preview performance of the Huntington Theatre Company's Miracle at Naples.

Visit to Boston, Day 1

Last Friday, Jim and I flew to Boston to visit with Anna and her fiance, Matt. They arranged for us to stay at the Colonnade Hotel on Huntington Avenue that's very near Anna's office. Our room was gorgeous with a spectacular view. We had a lovely lunch at the hotel's restaurant, Brasserie Jo.

After lunch, we walked down to see where Anna works.

Friday night, we saw the Huntington Theatre Company's excellent production of Two Men of Florence by Richard Goodwin.



At intermission, Anna introduced us to the playwright and his equally famous wife, Doris Kearns Goodwin. Jim was very excited because he is a huge fan of Doris, an authority on the presidency. Doris' most recent book, Team of Rivals, a book about Lincoln's cabinet, is being made into a film by Steven Spielberg and our friend, Tony Kushner, is writing the script. Richard's play was excellent and we particularly loved the performance of Jay O. Sanders, the actor who played Galileo.
